El Orbits – Promo Shots

Went out to 3700 Main to take some shots of The El Orbits for possible use on the upcoming new album as well as other promotional material.

Let me tell you, shooting for fun is one thing, shooting on spec is a different animal entirely. I shoot in my own particular style and “as my mood dictates.” I capitalize on opportune lighting and subject matter and I do it for my own pleasure.

Setting up a shot and trying for a specific effect combined with dealing with various personalities makes me edgy. Of course they’re all friends and that helps. But still, I get stage fright from behind the camera if that makes any sense.

I have a ton of photos to process this week. These two jumped out right off the bat:

We’ll see how they stand up after I’ve had a chance to more fully review what I’ve got.

It’s raining. The above picture was taken around 9:45 pm. The sun doesn’t set until 10:00 pm.

Like a duck, I braved the mucky weather and headed forth in search of a pub for a pint and some live music.

It’s easy to see the appeal and charm of an true Irish pub with weather like this. You go from wet, bedraggled and miserable to warm and comfortable in nothing flat.

I almost didn’t recognize it as an Irish pub because there was no bitter, hate-filled, resentment holding, proprietress scowling at the patrons, looking to alienate good people for reasons known only to herself.

Must be a Houston thing…

My first exhibition!

Some months ago I submitted some pictures for an upcoming photo exhibit called 600 sq mi: Photos from Houston. It’s a juried show, meaning that you pay the entry fee and a panel of judges determine if your work is worthy enough to be included or not.

For some odd reason I had my dates confused and thought that the notifications were going out on June 13th instead of July 13th. When I failed to receive any communication from the organizers of the event in June I figured I must not have made the grade and was, quite frankly, dissapointed. I cursed the organizers of the event quietly under my breath and swore a terrible revenge before moving on with the day to day obligations of my life.

Imagine my surprise when, as I was checking my e-mail one last time in Seattle before my flight home the other day, I discovered a notification im my inbox that said “Congratulations! Your work has been selected for “600 sq mi”

Well color me pickled tink and consider the oath of retribution retracted, null and void.

The 600 sq mi exhibition will run at MSquared Gallery in the Heights from Sept. 5 to Oct. 7, 2007, with an opening reception Saturday, Sept. 8.

If you want to know which of my photographs was selected you’ll have to come to the show…

Now comes the process of getting the print made of the piece that was selected and then getting it framed and delivered to the gallery.

Yay me!
