Got a text message from Conn reminding me about the Urban Animal Joust in The Heights. I was able to scoot on down to the Montrose Skate Shop and catch the last few bouts.

There’s just something compelling about adults on skates bashing each other with padded weapons….

It was humorous to watch as the crowd would shout out “CAR” to have the jousters get out of the street, just like when we used to play street ball as kids…

Zoo Portrait

Excursion To The Houston Zoo

Cynthia and I decided we’d go to the zoo and renew our memberships and take a walk through since it was such a lovely day. Once we took care of the renewal we headed head straight for the Meerkat exhibit, only to find it choked off with a wacky batch of seniors with an over abundance of very elaborate camera gear…

There were about 6 of them with high powered lenses, tripods and tricked out flash units not to mention backpacks, camera vests and various other sundry gear. It was rather comical, to say the least.

This guy was the most “loaded for bear” of them all…

Despite the camouflage, I am fairly certain the meerkats saw him in the abundant sunlight.

The Suspects

Thomas Escalante salutes his dark master as The Suspects perform another reunion show at the Continental Club last Friday night…

Flaming Truck

Friday night had all the earmarks of being a good night on the 3700 block of Main. The Suspects were playing their second “reunion” show with The Aqua Velva opening up. And if that wasn’t enough, The Light Rock Express were groovin over at Charlie’s Big Top. Things were just getting “fired” up when the doorman of the Continental Club exclaimed “Holy Sh*t! A flaming car!”

I turned just in time to see a truck driving down Alabama towing a backhoe on a trailer and the trailer was ON FIRE….I thought at first this was some kind of art car event or something.

A handful of us ran around the corner to see what was up and we saw the truck pull up next to a gas station.

Could you imagine being at the pump, just minding your own business filling your tank and a truck load of flaming death just pulls up?

Apparently there was an industrial strength cardboard barrel full of trash on the back of the truck that had managed to ignite. The guys jumped out of the truck and pulled it down to the street where it commenced to roll around.

One of the guys from the truck hopped out and had the wherewithal to climb into the backhoe, fire it up and attempt to tamp out the flames. This resulted in the flaming horror rolling down the street several feet.

Fortunately, it rolled AWAY from the gas pumps.

The group of men in the truck and the guy in the backhoe all did their part in extinguishing the flames and even got some help from a handful of bewildered homeless guys and had it mostly put out by the time the fire department arrived.

Just another reason why I try to have my camera with me at all times. You just never know what your going to see at any given time. The last two shots here are my favorites and the ones I wanted to show off, but I felt the context was important.

Zappa Plays Zappa – The Evidence

I caught the Zappa Plays Zappa show last night at the Verizon Wireless Theater. I had seen the Zappa Plays Zappa show last year featuring Terry Bozzio and Steve Vai and it was spectacular.

This time around the special guest was Ray White who’s vocals and guitar work show up on such notable Zappa discs as Zappa In New York, You Are What You Is and LÃ¤ther just to name a few.

The opening guitar duet with Frank was awesome, and maybe a little creepy. Father and son jamming together from beyond the grave.

It was a great concert and well worth staying up past my bedtime on a school night to go see.

I’ve been rather tickled that many of my photos have ended up in places like Myspace as bands’ and friends’ profile pictures. I’ve even had a few show up in photo galleries on more official band web sites.

I am almost always asked for permission and my only stipulation is a photo credit, a link back to my site and please ask first. I think that’s fair.

For now it’s cool and novel to just give them away in such a manner. It’s free publicity, not that I am looking to go pro or anything (yet). Besides, what else would I do with them other than let them languish on my hard drive…

A few weeks ago I was contacted by the webmaster for Wayne “The Train” Hancock about using some of my photos on the web site. I’m a pretty big fan and this was fine by me. I gave the guy permission to use what he wanted from my site. There’s no money involved, but I do get a photo credit and a link back to my site so that’s pretty cool.

I just got an e-mail from the webmaster letting me know the pics had been added to Wayne’s photo gallery. What he didn’t tell me was that one of them is on the entry page.
