Saturday night I broke routine and followed my musical nose to the upstairs of Rudyard’s to catch The Small Stars.

Imagine, if you will, seven caricatures from some cheesy out of the way casino/lounge act in Reno, Nevada and you will begin to understand what The Small Stars are all about.

It’s pure “shtick” and they do it well. In fact, they do it VERY well. You see, they’re not just a bunch of hacks with a comedic idea, they are each skilled musicians and what they accomplish as an ensemble is nothing short of flabbergasting.

Featured in the band is Austin guitar legend Landis Armstrong (aka Richard Steele) from such noteworthy musical projects as McLemore Avenue and The El Orbits.

Cynthia jokingly suggests I have a big ole’ man crush on Landis. I suspect she’s right. He’s a nice guy and an amazing musician and whenever he performs in town I try to make it a point to go see him.

Oh Landis, if only someone could tame him…

The front man for The Small Stars goes by the stage name of Guy Fantasy. His real name is Miles Zuniga and is most famous for the song “The Way” he wrote and performed with the one hit wonder band Fastball in the 90’s. He’s incredibly funny and reminds me is subtle ways of a musical Bill Hicks.

On of the more entertaining characters is Vic Odin, the “manager” of the band who has some GREAT songs he sings and cracks me up when he’s running around the performance venue with his bullhorn.

All in all, a very enjoyable evening.

Aqua Velva, Houston’s only and by default, best B-52’s cover band, Clouseaux, a band that defies description…lounge, tiki and eclectic are good adjectives to start with and The Flying Fish Sailors…all combined for one evening and it’s a pajama party to boot!

Molly and the Ringwalds will be doing they’re usual happy hour show from 7-9ish. There’s no guarantee they will wear pajamas but the rest of us will be adorned appropriately. Wear yours and get in free!

Reelin’ in the years

The Flying Fish Sailors had a very humble, yet ambitious beginning. This is a photo from one of our first live performances (circa 1988) at what was then known as The Wellington Stone on W. Alabama in the Montrose area of Houston.

Saturday night at the Continental Club was Jesse Dayton’s Honky Tonk and Hot Rod Music Festival. The show featured one of my favorites, Jesse Dayton and the Road Kings along with two of my other must see performers, Telecaster legend Red Volkert (Red was lead guitarist for the great Merle Haggard for many years) and Two Hoots and a Holler.

Also on the bill was a band I was not familiar with. C.C. Adcock from Lafayette, Louisiana.

C.C. Adcock put on an amazing show. Jesse Dayton even joined them on stage and the two guitar players had at it and it was a rockin good time.

I had to take a flash shot of CC Adcock’s bass player to better show the pepto-pink upright bass.

Uhhh, yea…

All in all a pretty spectacular evening.

The 6th Annual St. Andrew’s in the Heights Celtic Festival

Sunday, February 26th from NOON to 5:30PM @ 19th and Heights Boulevard

The Festival will be in conjunction with The Gathering of the Celts,
traditionally hosted by The Celtic Chorus of Houston every February.

The afternoon will include a wide variety of Entertainers on two stages,
Vendors with Celtic themes, a renowned Silent Auction, a Stained-Glass Tour,
great food and drink plus Games for children of all ages.

The Festival will begin following the St. Andrew’s Episcopal 10:30AM Church
Service as bagpipers lead everyone to the “Kirking of the Celts” and then,
to the opening performance on the Outdoor Stage. Here’s a sample of the

It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder

Beats of Basquiat at the Museum of Fine Arts here in Houston, TX wasÂ a monthly event that was hosted to celebrate the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Each month there would be live music and Dj’s.

Last night was the final event and the headliner was Grandmaster Flash.

I must say, it was pretty awesome show, in a “I remember the 80’s” kinda way. Lots of good people and a very nice time.

Colored lights can hypnotize

Our instore performance at Sig’s LagoonÂ went very well. There is a photographer who shoots at the Continental Club and uses a lot of pro-gear. He shot our performance and sent me some of the results. I like this one the best.

He did some other cool shots in black and white and one where he left my shirt in color. You can see those in the Flying Fish Sailors gallery.

Impromptu goodness

Members of my band (The Flying Fish Sailors for those not in the know) are playing an impromptu show at Sig’s Lagoon on Wednesday night, jan 25th.

It’s going to be Jim, Greg and myself from 9:15 to 10:00 pm.

It’s part of Greg’s birthday celebration going on that evening.

If you have a chance, stop on by as it’s open to the public and free.
