Off Memorial Drive between Kirkwood and Dairy Ashford reside the wild peafowl of West Houston. Peacocks and Peahens roam the yards and streets, putting on a show and making a racket. Their call sounds like a baby crying out or a cat in severe pain. Some residents describe their call as “sounds like somebody being murdered.”
Overall they seem oblivious to the human residents and the occasional gawkers like myself who drive down to see them.
Apparently the population of about 50 birds are offspring from a pair that a landowner gave his wife more than 30 years ago. From what I understand, most of the residents like the birds.
And this one particular Peacock had no problem at all with me taking his picture as he presented himself, in all his glory, to any Peahen who cared to have a romp or a gander.
I love these. I grew up in the next neighborhood over and have encountered these guys on many occasions. Especially like pc1 & pc4, they remind me of the pictures I took when one member of this flock lost his way in a storm and landed on my parents’ roof. Thanks for sharing!
There is a neighborhood just a couple of miles away from us here in NW Houston that also has some peacocks running around. Similar story – before the area was developed a local farmer had them. Now there is a well-established neighborhood and they still roam around and have gone “wild”!

I live on the opposite side of the freeway in Lakeside Estates, just down Memorial (well it turns into Briar Forest), and they wander into my street every year. We went driving around that neighborhood during spring break to see the houses for fence ideas (our neighborhood isn’t quite safe anymore with all the apartments off of briar forest) and ran into a bunch of the peacocks. My friend was with us since she came down with me for Spring Break, and she LOVES peacocks. It was a real treat for her 🙂
Thank you for your pictures. I love them. They are living proof that West Houston is a nice place to live. When there is no wild animals roaming around it is the miserable time then.
Last Saturday, my husband and I were watching the Peacocks. We fell in love for them. And now I’m enjoining the pictures that you took .Thank you for this.
Beautiful, would love 2 catch a glimpse of them
